Laura Ford (b.1961)

University of Warwick

Artist in various media and teacher, born in Cardiff, who studied at Bath Academy of Art, 1978–82, with an exchange term at Cooper Union, New York, then Chelsea School of Art, 1985. Her group shows included Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 1982; Serpentine Gallery, 1983; Sculpture in the City, Bath, 1986; Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield, 1988; and Six of the Best at Christopher Hull Gallery, 1989. Had a solo show at Nicola Jacobs Gallery, 1987; Benjamin Rhodes, Gallery, 1991; and Spacex Gallery, Exeter, 1996. In Ford’s sculpture exhibition Desperados, at Houldsworth Fine Art, 2001, the gallery was cluttered with soft, benign, childlike figures, dressed as for a playground, yet the patterns and textiles of their skin disguised their faces.
