Tape, slide, video and film, sculpture and installation artist, born in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. Did a foundation course at Dyfed College of Art, 1976–7; obtained a first-class honours degree in fine art at St Martin’s School of Art, 1977–80; and a master’s honours degree in film and television, Royal College of Art, 1981–4. Awards included The Worldwide Video Festival, The Hague, first prize, with a similar prize at 3e Semaine Internationale de Video, Geneva, both 1989. Evans’ prize-winning film Degrees of Blindness included, as did many others, the performance artist Leigh Bowery, who named this as his favourite film of 1989. Participated in extensive exhibitions and screenings, including solo show at London Filmmakers’ Co-op, 1981; another at B2 Gallery, 1982; The New Art, Tate Gallery, 1983; Cinema as Art, National Film Theatre, 1986; retrospective screenings at London Filmmakers’ Co-op and masterclass lecture at Riverside Studios, both 1988; and Signs of the Times, Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, and Video sculpture, installation commissioned by Kijkhuis in Den Haag, part of a retrospective, both 1990.
