Figurative painter on a grand scale but with a restricted palette, English was concerned with the contemporary world while harking back to the Old Masters and traditional icons, as in his works at The Saatchi Gallery Young British Artists III show, 1994. He was born in Berlin, Germany, and did a foundation course at Bournemouth College of Art, 1977–8, then an honours degree in fine art painting at Central School of Art & Design, 1978–81.
