Architect and sculptor who spent much of his spare time painting. He was born in Leicester and studied in Grimsby and Newcastle, where he gained a bronze medal. Notable among his public works are his mosaic of the Battle of Waterloo for Manchester’s Free Trade Hall; Sculptures at the back of that building; and his prizewinning war memorial at Sale, Cheshire, to the 10th Battalion Lincolns, a marble statue of St George. Few of his paintings were commissioned and most remained unframed until the death of his wife, after which there was a studio sale at the Manchester Auction Mart in 1980. Manchester City Art Gallery holds his work, which was also exhibited at RA, RI, RCamA, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
