Painter in watercolour, printmaker and teacher, born in Bilston, Staffordshire. He studied at the College of Art in Birmingham under Richard Stubbington, 1939–42, then at Royal College of Art under Robert Austin, 1947–51. From 1952–8, lectured in printmaking and illustration at South-East Essex Technical College. From 1958–83 he was artist designer at Bank of England Printing Works, where he was designer of the Series D notes: £1, Newton; £5, Wellington; £10, Nightingale; £20, Shakespeare; and £50, Wren. He was elected RE in 1961, being its president in 1975, the year he was elected a fellow of RWS. Was also a member of RWA and honorary member of RBSA, also a member of Art Workers’ Guild. Eccleston’s watercolours were much concerned with subjects on the water’s edge and his prints, mainly of industrial subjects, included a water-edge suite, 1987.
