Painter of costume pieces, such as Searching the Deed, included in Gladwell & Company’s 2005 Autumn Exhibition. Dovaston was born in Wandsworth, lived in Ealing and attended at the School of Art there, South Kensington under Charles West Cope and John Watson Nicol and then for five years the Royal Academy Schools. She studied there under various teachers, winning a British Institution Scholarship and several Silver Medals. Dovaston was elected RBA in 1910, also exhibiting at the RA Summer Exhibition and Walker’s Galleries. Her highly detailed pictures endeavour to represent life in bygone, especially eighteenth-century, England. Although Dovaston depicts imaginary scenes she said that “They tell a story in which the spectator is invited to fill in the details at will”.
