Painter, born in London, who studied at Hornsey School of Art. During World War I she worked for the London Fire Service. After leaving home to marry the theatre critic Willson Disher she became friendly with members of the Bloomsbury Group. When her marriage broke up in the late 1920s she began a relationship with a member of John Grierson’s General Post Office film unit and became involved in its work. After the war she travelled widely, living in South Africa and Jamaica, paying her way by painting portraits. For many years shared a studio with Vera Cuningham, whose work influenced her style. Disliking the smell of oil paint Eve Disher opted for gouache, and as well as portraits – which included Professor J B S Haldane, now in the National Portrait Gallery – she sometimes painted flower pictures and urban scenes.
