American painter, born in Santa Monica and active mainly in Los Angeles. His early work was influenced by the *Abstract Expressionist Clyfford *Still, but in the mid-1960s he emerged as a leading exponent of *Post-Painterly Abstraction, painting *Hard-Edged compositions on *shaped canvases (Vector, 1968, Tate). Often his pictures employ motifs such as stripes, zigzags, and chequerboard patterns to create ambiguous or self-contradictory spatial effects, so his work has sometimes been classified as *Op art.
