Robin Dare was born in Seaton, Devon, in 1937 and joined the RAF as a young man after living through the Second World War. Dare was in the RAF for 25 years and stationed in Gibraltar for a couple of years. He was trained as an air traffic controller and he and his family were at RAF Shawbury for seven years, Gibraltar for two years, then Chivenor, North Devon, Uxbridge, Odiham, Hampshire, before settling in Peterborough. He was then posted to Ely and RAF Valley after which he retired. He taught himself to paint with the help of painting by numbers, local art groups and practice. Dare was always painting as well as making model aircraft to fly or boats to sail, and even building a large landscape for his son’s train set. His paintings in later years were of aircraft and many were presented as gifts, such as the one of Gibraltar in the collection of Black Watch Castle & Museum.
He also painted the family’s pet dogs and these are lovely lasting memorials to the animals.
