Artist in oil, pastel, charcoal and conté, and teacher, full name Deryck Stephen Crowther. He was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. Studied at the College of Art there, winning a Royal College of Art scholarship, 1941. After war service, 1941–6, was at the Royal College, 1946–9, teachers including Gilbert Spencer, Rodrigo Moynihan, Carel Weight and Ruskin Spear. From 1950–87 was a lecturer in drawing and painting at Cleveland College of Art & Design, Hartlepool. Crowther was included in Jack Beddington’s 1957 volume Young Artists of Promise. He was made a member of RBA in 1958 and became president of Hartlepool Art Club. Crowther said that he owed a debt to the Old Masters and tried “to apply the lessons learnt to my own work, which reflects my life and environment”.
