Painter, printmaker, constructions maker, teacher and writer, born in Manchester. He attended the College of Art there and Slade School of Fine Art. In 1956–8 travelled and painted in Italy and France on Rome and French Government Scholarships. From 1959–63 was assistant director of the WAC. He then held several teaching posts in Britain and abroad, being from 1976–87 principal of Falmouth School of Art. He was a member of LG and chairman of Penwith Society of Arts, 1982–4. In the latter year he published Painting the Warmth of the Sun, St Ives Artists, 1935–75. Wrote Artists and Bohemians: 100 years with the Chelsea Arts Club, 1992, and The Shining Sands, Artists in Newlyn and St Ives 1880–1930, 1994. Cross was a prolific exhibitor, group exhibitions including John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, Reading Museum, SWG, SEA and elsewhere.
