Italian painter and sculptor. He was born in Monza and studied at the Brera Academy in nearby Milan, *Carrà being one of his teachers. His work was very varied. Early in his career he painted geometrical abstractions, then in the late 1940s and early 1950s he was involved in the *Spatialism movement of his friend *Fontana, whilst at the same time producing the first *Action Paintings by an Italian artist (in his series of calligraphic spiral paintings of 1949–52).
