James Humbert Craig was born in Belfast, Ireland on 12 July 1877. Apart from a brief period at Belfast College of Art, he was a self-taught artist. He worked mainly as a painter of landscapes born in Belfast. Mainly self-taught he did however spend a brief period at the Belfast College of Art. Predominately a painter of landscapes. He exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin; the Fine Art Society and Royal Academy in London; and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. He was elected a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1928. He was also elected a member of the Royal Ulster Academy and the Ulster Arts Club. He was the first President of the Ulster Society of Painters in 1921. Craig died at the Shack Castle Park, Cushendun, county Antrim, Ireland on 12 June 1944.
