Theatrical designer, printmaker, actor and writer. Craig was the son of the architect E W Godwin and the great actress Ellen Terry, and the father of Edward Anthony Craig (who worked as Edward Carrick), artist, theatre and film designer. A flamboyant polemicist, Craig told of his early life in Index to the Story of my Days, 1957. He was for a time an actor, but gradually turned to the theory and practice of scene design and direction, his extremely simple sets having a big influence on the theatre in America and in continental Europe, rather less in England. Early on he became interested in wood engraving, in which he was substantially self-taught and prolific, although he learned simplification of design from William Nicholson and James Pryde, working as the Beggarstaff Brothers.
