Artist, designer and teacher, born in London, who graduated from Falmouth School of Art in 1982. In 1984 he joined Sculptors in Greater Manchester Association, having his studio there for some years. Collins subsequently turned to painting and poetry as a means of expression. An exhibition at Manto’s, Manchester, in the mid-1990s won critical acclaim. Collins designed sets and costumers for Duchy Opera’s production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute and carried out a number of large-scale commissions in Manchester. He held the post of lecturer in sculpture at Bolton Institute of Higher Education, 1987–93. In 1996 Collins was included in North by North West, at Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, paintings which flowed “from an eight-and-a-half years’ relationship lived under the shadow of Aids”.
