Artist in a wide range of styles and media, photographer, potter, teacher and editor, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. His early studies included chemistry and geology. Attended Witwatersrand Technical College, 1958–60. Decided to concentrate on art as a career and when in London, 1961–5, attended Central School of Arts and Crafts part-time. On returning to Johannesburg taught at the Visual Arts Research Centre, 1966, and privately. He also ran the Trevor Coleman Gallery, 1977–85, and edited Gallery magazine, 1981–3. Was a leading member of the South African Association of Arts. Coleman was keenly interested in archaeology, geology, anthropology and African art. He travelled extensively in Africa and abroad, reflected in colourful, hard-edge pictures.
