Painter, draughtsman, teacher and writer, born in Brighton, Sussex. He attended the local College of Art, 1947–53. After National Service he was a visiting teacher of art in Orkney, 1955–8. Following several years teaching in Sussex he did an advanced diploma in art education at Birmingham University and College of Art, 1964–5, becoming senior lecturer in art at Eastbourne College of Education, 1965–76, principal lecturer in art at East Sussex College of Higher Education, 1976–8, then senior lecturer in art history at Brighton Polytechnic, 1978–88. He wrote for The Artist magazine and published Henry Lamb: the Artist and His Friends, 1985, having completed his doctoral thesis on Lamb. Among Clements’ solo shows were Orkney County Library, 1956–8, National Film Theatre, 1972, Castle Rushen in the Isle of Man, 1978, in 1988 he shared a show with David Chapman at Brighton Polytechnic Gallery, further solo exhibitions including Bloomsbury Revisited at the Bloomsbury Workshop in 1992, New Vistas: Sussex from the Bypass, Pallant House, Chichester, 1996, and Thebes Gallery, Lewes, 2002.
