Artist in oil on canvas, pencil on paper and mixed media, born in Manchester. Intensive study of paintings by such artists as Rembrandt, Titian, Holbein and Chardin in the National Gallery was important to his work. Clark was noted for his realistic portraits, including the artist Francis Bacon, Sickert’s model Marguerite Kelsey and Muriel Belcher, proprietor of Soho’s Colony Room drinking club. This was commended in the BP Portrait Award 1992 at National Portrait Gallery and Clark contributed to the tribute to Belcher at Michael Parkin Fine Art, 1982. Mixed shows also included 75 Years of the London Group, Royal College of Art, 1988; Acquisitions 1986–1990, British Museum, 1990; and The Portrait Now, National Portrait Gallery, 1993–4.
