Painter, born in London, married for a time to the writer Anthony West, son of the writers H G Wells and Rebecca West. Church’s father was a barrister, her mother a socialite and her younger sister Margaret, the first woman to be elected to RIBA, was married to the Modernist architect Berthold Lubetkin. She attended Brighton Art School, 1928–30; Royal Academy Schools, 1930–3; then the Slade School of Fine Art, 1933–4. The free landscape style of her friend Ivon Hitchens was a strong influence. Church’s friends included John Piper, his wife Myfanwy Evans and the painter Frances Hodgkins, whose portrait of Church was bequeathed to the Tate Gallery. Took part in mixed shows including RA, NEAC, AIA, National Museum of Wales in Cardiff and Tate Gallery.
