Artist, illustrator and teacher, born in Croydon, Surrey, who studied graphics and painting at London University, 1936–9, served in the Royal Artillery during World War II, was captured by Japanese at the fall of Singapore, in 1945 being attached to Australian Army Headquarters as a war artist and illustrator. Studied at Royal College of Art, 1946–9, having in 1939 had to decline a scholarship due to the war. In 1950 moved to Falmouth as principal of Falmouth School of Art, which he helped establish, also being county art adviser for Cornwall. From 1958–84 was principal of West of England College of Art in Bristol with a concurrent lectureship at local University. Exhibited widely throughout world, including Falmouth Connections at Falmouth Art Gallery, 1994, shortly after he had published a book of his Japanese prisoner of war drawings.
