Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. He studied at Slade School of Fine Art, 1962–6, where he won the Tonks Drawing Prize, prizes for landscape drawing and first prize in the Summer Composition. On leaving, a David Murray Landscape Scholarship awarded by RA and a Boise Travelling Scholarship from University College permitted Carr to spend time at British School in Rome. In 1965 he was president of Young Contemporaries. Carr was head of pre-foundation studies at Camden Arts Centre, 1969–82, eventually returning there as tutor. Other teaching was done at Goldsmiths’ College School of Art, Birmingham School of Art’s postgraduate department and Kingston School of Art. Carr showed with RA and LG, being elected to LG in 1987.
