Painter and illustrator, born in Enstone, Oxfordshire. Rather than attend an art school he chose to study in the studio of a professional artist. Canning had his first solo show at Bodkin Gallery, Chipping Norton, 1979, and he soon exhibited at RA and RI, in 1983 becoming the youngest artist ever to be elected an associate member of the RBA. Later solo shows included The Book Gallery, 1997, and The New Millennium Gallery, 2000 and 2004, both in St Ives, Cornwall. In 2002, Canning shared an exhibition with David Holmes at Fermynwoods Contemporary Art, Brigstock. In 1982 Canning’s work was bought for the Nuffield Fund Paintings in Hospitals scheme, the University of Wales and many corporate collections holding examples. He illustrated Graeme Garden’s The Skylighters, published in 1988.
