Sculptor and teacher, born in London, who studied at Maidstone School of Art, 1948–50, then St Martin’s School of Art, 1950–2, followed by National Service, 1953–5, in Royal Corps of Signals. Taught for many years at City & Guilds of London Art School after working as a stone-carver for 10 years. Butler’s work was figurative, especially the female figure. As a contrast, his first major commission was a twice-life-size portrait statue of President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, for Nairobi. Other commissions included more African statues; one from the Richard III Society for a memorial statue of the king at Castle Gardens, Leicester; portrait statue of Sir John Moore, at the barracks of that name, Winchester; John Wilkes, the political figure, in New Fetter Lane; and Skipping Girl, Harrow.
