Painter and draughtsman, notably in pastel, who used a bright palette, had a strong decorative sense and completed many small pictures of animals and birds from observation in London Zoo. Bussy was born in Dôle, France, into a peasant family. A scholarship took him to Paris where in 1886 he entered École des Arts Décoratifs. Four years later moved to École des Beaux-Arts where he studied under Delaunay and Moreau. Whistler and Japanese prints were key influences. Had his first solo show at Galerie Durand-Ruel, Paris, in 1897, then went on to show widely in England and France. He married Dorothy Strachey in 1903 and settled in Roquebrune, in the south of France, spending frequent summers in Britain. Their daughter Jane-Simone Bussy also painted.
