Figurative painter and gallery administrator, born and lived in Glasgow, where he attended the School of Art under Jack Knox, 1988–92. Influences included “William McTagggart senior and John Bellany.” Had a Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, residency in 1998. Group exhibitions included SSA Annual at RSA, Edinburgh, 1995; BP Portrait Award, National Portrait Gallery, from 1995; and Glasgow Now, Crickethill Gallery, New York, America, and Paint, Will’s Art Warehouse, both 2002, where Buchanan said that his works sought “to invoke strangely familiar scenes, like snapshots or memories in a personal history. At the same time they remain ambiguous”. Solo exhibitions included Firth Gallery, Edinburgh, 1997, and New Works, Egg Gallery, Glasgow, from 2000.
