Printmaker (born Doris Boulton, her original exhibiting name) who studied at Burslem School of Art, Stoke-on-Trent, then at Royal College of Art, 1916–21. She showed at RA and was an associate of RE, 1918–21. Went to Egypt, reportedly teaching art in Cairo, and making prints of views there. Back in London in 1930 she attended Slade School of Fine Art for a term and began exhibiting again. Came into contact with modern art movements, was influenced by Franz Marc and the Blaue Reiter style and changed to relief printing methods. Married Lionel Maude, whom she had met at a Fabian summer school (his parents Aylmer and Louise Maude, members of a strongly Socialist family, were Tolstoy’s authorised English translators and biographers; they had been part of a late-1890s Tolstoyan community at Purleigh, Essex), and began to exhibit as Doris Boulton-Maude.
