(b The Hague, 18 Feb. 1817; d The Hague, 14 Sept. 1891). Dutch painter, a member of the Hague School. He specialized in paintings of church interiors and was much inspired by the work of Emanuel de Witte—in many of his pictures the figures even wear 17th-century costumes.
