Painter and teacher, born in Bedford. He studied at Berkshire College of Art, 1972–3, and West Surrey College of Art at Farnham, 1975–8. In 1979 he set up a studio at Neatham Mill, near Alton, Hampshire. From 1980 Bird held a number of part-time teaching posts, including West Surrey College and Berkshire College of Art. He also taught mentally handicapped and children’s classes. He won a number of Southern Arts Awards, including in 1981 artist-in-residence at Alton 6th Form College. Group shows included Wessex Artists, Southampton Art Gallery, 1980; Platform Four, at Reading Art Gallery and Museum, 1982; and Goldsmiths’ show at Woodlands Art Gallery, 1983. Had series of solo shows, including Brillig Gallery, Bath, and Hexagon Art Centre, Reading, both 1979; and Southampton Art Gallery and West End Art Centre, Aldershot, both 1980.
