After graduating with honours from Chelsea School of Art, 1981–5, Bengoechea studied for a master’s degree at the Royal College of Art, 1986–8. Group exhibitions included Camden Annual, Camden Arts Centre, 1986, and East End Open Studios, at Norfolk House Studios, 1989. In that year Bengoechea shared a show at Cadogan Contemporary. There were solo exhibitions at Flaxman Gallery, 1987, and G Comte Gallery, Valencia, in 1988.
