Painter whose work included military subjects and portraits, born in Chester, Cheshire, whose wide range of influences included many British and overseas artists, ranging from Rembrandt, de Laszlo and Millais to Hals, Hogarth and Sorolla y Bastida. Nick Bashall graduated in law from Cambridge University, 1976–9, then studied at Escuela libre del Metitteraneo, Mallorca, 1991–6, under Joaquim Torrens Llado, having practised as a commercial lawyer in London, Dubai and Pakistan, 1983–90. Bashall took part in a number of London-based fairs with Fine Art Commissions, solo shows including InFinArt, Cape Town, South Africa, 1997; Caelt Gallery, 1998; Majlis Gallery, Dubai, 1999; and Arndean Gallery, 2002. Among portraits in private collections were the Duke of Westminster, Lords Stafford and Daresbury and Anita Rothschild.
