Painter, draughtsman, printmaker, photographer and teacher, born and lived in Birmingham. He studied at Moseley Road Secondary School of Art, Birmingham, 1966–73, under John Swift; Falmouth College of Art, 1973–6, gaining an honours degree in fine art, teachers including Francis Hewlett and Richard Platt; then did a Royal Academy Schools postgraduate course, 1977–80, under Peter Greenham and Margaret Green. From 1986–90 studied at Birmingham Polytechnic for teacher’s certificate and further postgraduate work in history of art and design. Among Bartlett’s awards were the Turner Gold Medal, 1978; Stowells Trophy overall winner, 1979; Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship, 1981–2; Daler-Rowney Prize at RBSA Open, 1996; and pastel and drawing prize at the 2003 open exhibition of the RBSA.
