Painter, draughtsman and teacher, born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, where he studied at the College of Art, 1962–6, winning the Queen’s Award travelling scholarship to Italy, 1963, and the Sheffield University Institute art teacher’s diploma, 1966–7. Held several teaching posts, latterly principal lecturer in fine art, at University of Northumbria, 1980–95. From Northern Arts won a Printmaking Bursary, 1975, Production Award, 1989, and a Print Award, 1995. Residencies included Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham, 1988–9. Commissions included Olympic Games, Barcelona, 1992. Was Sidney Holgate Fellow, Grey College, University of Durham. Later shows included Picturing Sport, retrospective, Customs House Gallery, South Shields, 1998, and Henry Dyson Fine Art at Grey College and the Quaker Gallery, both 2000.
