Painter and teacher, who studied at Central School of Arts and Crafts. She was married to the artist Michael Rothenstein, for a time being known as Betty Rothenstein, then to the designer Eric Ayers. The painter Anne Rothenstein was her daughter. Taught painting at the Women’s Institute’s Denman College for many years. Fry Art Gallery in Saffron Walden holds her portrait of the matron of Dr Barnardo’s, Kitty Edwards. As well as being known for her portraits, Ayers produced small, richly coloured and darkish still lifes and genre scenes, a group being included in the Tenth Anniversary show at Cadogan Contemporary, 1996. She also exhibited at RA, SWA and elsewhere and lived in London. Shared an exhibition with Ursula McCannell at Broughton House Gallery, Cambridge, 2003.
