Painter and teacher, born in Manchester, who spent his childhood in Durham. Gained a degree at department of fine art in Newcastle upon Tyne, 1968–72, and his master’s at Goldsmiths’ College, 1978–80. Went on to teach at St Martin’s School of Art. Was a prizewinner in the Festival Hall Flag Competition, under auspices of Arts Council, 1977. Mixed exhibitions included Whitechapel Open at Whitechapel Art Gallery, from 1976; Artists for Nuclear Disarmament, Acme Gallery, 1981; Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, 1982; and Paint, Presence, Other Stories, Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, 1983. There his gestural work was described at “improvisatory and accretive”. Later group shows included John Moores Liverpool exhibition, 1999. Had a series of solo exhibitions with Rebecca Hossack Gallery from 1989.
