Painter and draughtsman, born Edward John Gregory Alford. He was educated at Tonbridge School and Cambridge University. He did graduate work at University College, University of London, and taught at the Courtauld Institute of Art. Alford became principal of the Ontario Department of Education summer school for teachers of art; special lecturer in art at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario; instructor at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, in the school of fine arts; then from 1934–45 was professor of fine art and head of the department at the University of Toronto. From 1945–54 he was on the staff of the Rhode Island School of Design as head of the department of art history. Exhibited LG and at several venues in Canada. Lived at East Chatham, NY, in America.
