Installation art describes large, often mixed-media constructions designed for a specific location, such as a gallery or public space. They tend to be immersive, inviting viewers to interact and experience both the works and the space. Installation art developed in the 1960s alongside art movements such as minimalism and conceptual art, as artists rejected traditional, commodified art practices.
The roots of installation art can, however, be traced to earlier spatial experiments by avant-garde artists associated with Constructivism, Dada, and Surrealism.
