A grid is a pattern of equally spaced squares or rectangles, which can be used as a framework for artists to work with – or against – in the creation of their work. Grids have been used by artists for centuries as a means of ensuring correct proportions or as a way of scaling images up or down. It has become particularly associated with Modernity, as twentieth-century artists embraced the grid as an abstract visual language in itself.
