He used strong lighting effects, realistic figures based on models, and simple but dramatic compositions to illustrate religious stories. Seventeenth-century artists in Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, such as Jusepe de Ribera and Georges de la Tour, were particularly influenced by his approach.
