An illustration, drawing, cartoon, diagram or design that is featured in a book, manuscript or magazine. Illustrations can be presented separately from the text, or combined with it. Book illustrations can be purely decorative, educational, entertaining or satirical, and come in a wide variety of individual styles. Western book illustration, that we are familiar with today, had its roots in the development of woodblock printing in Europe.
