A view with a temple on a height on the right, and a castle below on the left, containing elements drawn from works by Richard Wilson (1714–1782). It is similar to ‘Landscape with Phaeton's Petition to Apollo’ commissioned by the Duke of Bridgewater in 1763 and engraved by William Wollett, of which there is an impression in the British Museum and a version now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, one of a series of four pictures also commissioned in 1763 by Henry Blundell of Ince Blundell Hall, near Liverpool but without the mythological figures. There is also a similar later view, again with figures, and also engraved by Woollett, called ‘Apollo and the Seasons’ of 1779 in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
