Marion, who was a graduate and talented artist in her own right, married Carmichael in 1893. She became Librarian to the Dundee Graphic Arts Association, a professional exhibiting body that Carmichael belonged to. She and her husband were members of a close-knit artist community – her sister Emma was married to the Tayport artist Alec Grieve (1864–1933).
