The Child Jesus rests on a bank in front of ruined stable, worshipped by Mary, Joseph and a shepherd. Two angels, holding a scroll, appear from the clouds. Francia, a native of Bologna, trained as a goldsmith and engraver. He added to these accomplishments the art of painting, both in tempera and oil colours. His earliest dated work is from 1492, his latest 1517. His masterpiece 'The Madonna and Saints', painted for the Bentivoglio family in 1499, is preserved in the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore.
