This painting depicts the 'Weinsberg Blood Easter', an infamous event in German history, which took place during the German Peasants’ War of 1524 and 1525. On Easter Sunday, 16th April 1525, at the town of Weinsberg in the north of the state of Baden-Württemberg, peasants attacked and destroyed the town’s castle, then proceeded to execute Count Ludwig von Helfenstein, the commander of both the town and its castle, who had previously treated them badly. The execution was an unprecedented move which shocked and outraged the German nobility and clergy, and in particular incurred the condemnation of Martin Luther, even though his preaching had fuelled the animosity of the peasants towards the noble classes. The latter had the town destroyed several weeks later, on 21st May, even though the townspeople had had nothing to do with the execution.
