Anne Brydges was the daughter of James Freeman and second wife of Harry Brydges.

Son of a Dutch army captain, Lely settled in England and became the leading portrait painter of his day. During the Commonwealth, he painted Cromwell but continued to flourish under the Restoration and became Principal Painter to the King in 1661. His success was such that he employed a large number of assistants churning out large numbers of portraits of uneven quality.
