John Joseph Barker came from a dynasty of Bath artists, the best known being his father, Thomas Barker. Thomas produced a series of early lithographs of rustic figures and his son’s painting may have been inspired by these. Rural scenes such as this were very popular at a time when the population of Britain was becoming increasingly urbanised.
