Notes

This painting is a copy of a French watercolour and gouache painting on vellum, which is itself after a lost original by Pierre Mignard.

It may equally represent Louis as Mars, the God of War, neither identification being mutually exclusive. There is an obvious parallel in Henri Gascars' portrait of James, Duke of York (later James II), when Lord Admiral for his brother Charles II.
