Peter Lanyon was based in St Ives. From 1950 to 1957 he taught at Bath Academy of Art based in Corsham Court, one of the most innovative art schools in the post-war period. Lanyon relished sharing his radical ideas with students and colleagues and taught alongside fellow St Ives painters, Terry Frost and Bryan Wynter.

Lanyon’s paintings of the early '50s are closely linked by the artist’s trains of thought and personal experiences. From 1950 his painting style became more abstract and loose. The Cornish landscape featured prominently with frequent references to weather and sky – viewpoints partly inspired by his gliding activities. Tragically, Lanyon died as a result of a gliding accident in 1964.
