The sitter was Bishop of Sherborne from 1928 to 1936, returning to Oxford in that year to become Archdeacon. He was Bishop of Dorchester from 1939 to 1952. The Hall Magazine of 1950 recorded: 'it depicts Dr Allen in the full scarlet of Episcopal Convocation dress, with a gold pectoral cross. Its fittingness as a tribute to his long concern for the Hall as Principal and, in later years as Honorary Fellow and Trustee has already been acclaimed.' The artist wrote that this was the first time he had painted a Bishop but that he had to insist that even a Bishop sit still.
