Sir James Matheson of Achany and the Lews represented Ross and Cromarty in Parliament from 1847 to 1868, when he resigned. He was created a baronet in 1850 in recognition of his great exertions and munificence in providing the inhabitants of the Lews with food during the severe famine of 1945–1946. Matheson was appointed Lord-Lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty in 1866.

Sir James Matheson of Achany & the Lews. Born 1796 Died 1878. Represented Ross & Cromarty in Parliament 1847–68 when he resigned. Created a baronet 1850 in recognition of his great exertions and munificence in providing the inhabitants of the Lews with food during the servere famine 1945–46. Appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ross & Cromarty 1866.
