John Paul Stewart Riddell Gibson was educated at Kingswood School, Bath and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He studied ordination at Ridley Hall in 1906. Reverend Gibson was a missionary in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) from 1906 until returning to take up the Principalship of Ridley in 1927. He left Ridley in 1945 to return to the mission field in Uganda.
